On Friday night, December 4, 2020, as over 100 people gathered at the inaugural First Friday Sacred Heart of Jesus Devotional Mass in Emsworth, PA for a candlelight service, something beautiful and strange happened.
Candles were lit everywhere—on the altar, in the window sills and along the main isle.
Just as mass began, one of the window candle’s flames shot up several feet and the entire candle melted in a flash. Wax poured down the wall and onto the floor, resembling the piercing of Jesus’ heart.
In the Catholic faith, the pierced heart of Jesus is a symbol of God's boundless and passionate love. When Jesus was on the cross and the soldier’s pierced his heart, the blood represents his unyielding love. Ironically, some of the melted candle wax also looked like spears, as Fr. Tim Deely who co-celebrated the mass with Fr. Jeff Craig, observed after the service.
By celebrating mass as part of a Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the first Friday of every month, participants can personally experience the 12 promises Jesus made to us through Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, when He appeared to her in the late 1600s.
And those promises are powerful and profound.
The 12 Promises of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
1. Grace, when you need it most.
2. Family peace.
3. Consolation for all your troubles.
4. Refuge during hard times.
5. Abundant blessing in your life.
7. A more enlivened faith.
8. Spiritual growth.
9. Family blessings.
10. For priests, touching hardened hearts.
11. Deep friendship with Jesus.
12. Eternal salvation (when you practice this devotion and come to mass on Friday for nine months straight).
The next Family Candlelight Mass for the Devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be held on Friday, January 1st at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Emsworth (154 Orchard Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15202).
